Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategist communications adviser. It's not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the strategic communication adviser at White House. But through it all Schlapp remains focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with White House's political as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as well in the larger communication operation for policy-related rollouts. Her focus so far is on topics like the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. Her interactions with journalists aren't at all in her current role. She gained attention in the wake of being announced as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own director of communications, multiple legal battles which could disrupt the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries who are caught in their own controversies. Schlapp never wavered from her goals, and she collaborated closely with White House policy and political teams. Her focus so far has been on matters such as school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. Schlapp doesn't deal with reporters much in her current role. She did draw a flurry of attention in March when her name was floated as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks as communications director. It's been a nasty fight. Schlapp's allies fought with Tony Sayegh in the press. Schlapp claimed that after that the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she had a discussion with the latter.
